Get Your Networking Game Down: Top 8 Tips for Networking at Events

Why Networking Events Matter

Walking into a networking event where you know you need to be social can feel extremely overwhelming. You don’t know where to stand or what to do with your hands and wonder if it’s just you feeling this way. It’s not…But here’s the upside. Going to an event to network is one of the fastest ways to grow your inner circle, find opportunities, and learn things you won’t get from scrolling online.

If you know how to network the right way, you stop wasting time and start making real connections.

1. Don’t Wing It. Have a Game Plan

Walking into a networking event with zero plan is like going grocery shopping hungry. Before you attend the event, make sure you:

  • Set 2 or 3 goals: These goals could include learning more about a certain industry from one person or pitching your business to another person. Doesn’t matter what they are, what matters is what you want to gain out of the event.
  • Know what you want out of the event: Do you want to meet a potential client or just have a good time?

Keep it simple, you don’t need to meet everyone at the event, you just need to accomplish what you set out to do from the beginning.

 2. Your Elevator Pitch Shouldn’t Sound Like an AI-Written Resume

An elevator pitch is the fastest way to get someone to either be fascinated with you or try to make an excuse to leave the conversations ASAP. But, don’t worry, it’s easy to get this down, you just need to be yourself. Just need to describe:

  • Who you are

  • What you do

  • Why it matters

If they’re interested, they’ll ask more. If not, cool. Not everyone is each other’s cup of tea.

3. Read the Room

Not every moment is the right moment. And as mentioned earlier, not everyone is each other’s cup of tea, and that’s okay.

If someone:

  • Keeps looking over your shoulder

  • Gives short answers

  • Seems distracted

Wrap it up politely. Also, don’t interrupt groups mid-conversation unless it feels open. Timing matters more than confidence sometimes.

Also don't try to "sell" everyone. If you walk into networking events thinking “who can I sell to,” people can feel it. It’s weird energy and people will find you desperate.

Just focus on genuine connection and be curious about what the person you’re talking to is talking about. If there’s a moment in the conversation where your trait is helpful then try to ease it into conversation.

Opportunities come naturally when people trust you. Networking is planting seeds, not closing deals on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of content works best for digital signage at events?

Short, eye-catching content works best. Think quick animations, short videos, bold text, and simple messaging. People are usually walking by, so your content should be easy to understand in just a few seconds.

How can sponsors make their digital signage stand out?

Focus on strong visuals and consistency. Use your brand colors, bold typography, and clean motion graphics. Avoid clutter. One clear message will always perform better than trying to say too much at once.

Do I need an AV company to use digital signage at events?

In most cases, yes. AV companies handle the screens, setup, and playback systems. They also make sure your content fits the screen size and resolution correctly. Working with them early helps avoid last-minute issues.

How does digital signage help with brand awareness?

Digital signage increases visibility through movement, brightness, and repetition. When attendees see your brand multiple times across different screens, it builds familiarity. That familiarity makes your brand more memorable long after the event ends.
